Past President of TCC (1999-2001) Ken Ziegler passed away on March 31. Memorial services were held in Cypress, CA, on April 7. Honoring his life and service to his country, a USS Naval Aircraft Carrier escorted his remains for a formal military burial at sea.
Ken Ziegler was a Naval Air Intelligence Officer, retiring after 28 1/2 years in 1970. He then entered the real estate business in the Buena Park, CA, area where he remained for over 15 years, receiving many awards.
Ken joined TCC in the early 80s and had been a BoardMember since 1992. In 2002 he was honored for having visited all 317 of the TCC-recognized destinations.
He said he spent time in all the places visited. He completed 81 cruises, made five trips to Antarctica in order to get to all the bases, and went to the North Pole on a Russian nuclear ice breaker. He was one of the few people to have traversed the Northwest Passage. He had been to China and India nine times each and visited all the African nations, most of them twice, some seven or eight times.
He is survived by two daughters and three granddaughters. |
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
We are all saddened by the death of Past President Ken Ziegler, whose many achievements are described elsewhere in this newsletter. Ken had traveled with many of us. I don’t know anyone who had taken more ocean voyages. He was one of the tiny number of members to have reached every single TCC destination. I remember a magnificent five-week voyage from the Falklands across the South Atlantic with Ken in 1994, when, as so often, he showed his grace and good humor to all on board.
By the time you read this, we will, here in New York, have seen the start of the great New York to Paris race – a centenary reenactment of the 1908 race (only three cars finished) won by a 1907-model Thomas Flyer roadster. (“The six starters zoomed up Broadway at speeds exceeding 30 miles an hour…Rivals said they were at a disadvantage because the Thomas team was permitted by patriotic rail operators to drive on trolley and train tracks….”) The Flyer finished second, actually, but its rival was penalized for shortcutting Alaska and Japan.
Perhaps if the new plans for a Bering Strait tunnel come to fruition, we will all be able to go by train from New York to Paris. That will be one of the great travel trips.

Charles Mowery passed away on April 1 in Venice FL; memorial services were on April 7.He was 93.
He and his wife of 63 years, Dorothy, organized the first Southwest Florida TCC chapter meeting in Sarasota in 1992. They handled the chapter meetings until their retirement in 2001.
He was a Lieutenant in the Navy and also worked at IBM, York Safe and Lock Co., the Naval Ordinance Plant and the U.S. Navy Supply Corp. He was active in the Lions Club and traveled all over the country as guest speaker.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, daughter and seven grandchildren.

Because of his extensive travel schedule, Bart M. Hackley, Jr., Newport Beach, CA, resigned from the TCC Board. He had served as Treasurer for the last two years. He and a friend just participated in the three-week “The Great Escape 2008: The Global Scavenger Hunt” which has taken them to worldwide destinations. At press time, their team was in the lead. This means they will be crowned “The World’s Greatest Travelers.” This year’s annual contest takes the team of two though at least 10 countries across four continents, completing hundreds of cultural-oriented scavenges. Limited to 25 teams, contestants accumulate points for completing extraordinary things.
Jim Smith, Saylorsburg, PA, recently returned from a Holland America World Cruise (picking up a few countries along the way). Several TCC members were on board and the group met for lunch on two occasions. See photo below:
