CHAIRMAN'S
MESSAGE
One
part of the travel experience is learning about new lands such as
we report in Info File Items. Another interesting part is that of
exciting and humorous (even embarrassing) situations that are encountered
abroad. Please share with us by sending along (not to exceed a typed
page) something that happened to you as this has been a popular
Centurian feature in the past.
50TH ANNIVERSARY
Click
this link to open a brief questionnaire regarding
our celebrations in 2004. Please take a moment to print and fill
out the form, then mail it to TCC headquarters. Thank you.
WAKE ISLAND
The U.S. Air Force has requested that our members DO
NOT contact them, as there is no public access to
the island for any reason. Private charter flights are no longer
permitted to land there. Please be patient, it may take some time,
like Midway.
JUNE 14TH MEETING
Special thanks to Bob Ihsen for sharing with us so many exciting
slides of his recent travel to So. Algeria & Niger. Thank you,
Bob.
NEW MEAL COSTS: SO. CALIFORNIA
With immediate effect our new meal rates will be $50 for members
and their guests, $60 for non members (not guests).
| A
HUMOROUS INCIDENT
Submitted by: T. Kent Berge
As I slept in a Nuevo Gorizia, Slovenia hotel in the mid-1980’s,
I was awakened
by an errant rooster who announced sunrise at 1:30 a.m. and
at intervals of 38 to 54 seconds until I arose. As I departed
the hotel, I checked out and told the desk clerk: “That
rooster belongs in chicken soup. I want you to put him in
some chicken soup!”
As
I hiked across the Italian Frontier in the pre-dawn light
I came to a Frontier Post manned by a single Frontier Guard.
He sized me up, noting my red pack, red jacket, red bandannas,
and full beard and expostulated loudly: “Garibaldi!”
Honored, I thought to myself: “I hope that when you
come to my country, the ‘frontier guard’ sizes
you up and proclaims: “George Washington!” |

PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
It's
almost time for our September luncheon – at Mr. Stox in Anaheim
– another of my favorite restaurants. My thanks to the Marshall
Family for opening for lunch especially for our club. You have read
about my favorite restaurants in other of my reports; so you may
get the opinion I like to eat out. That is not quite true. Eating
out is rarely done by me; I much prefer to DINE
out.
Food is something great to sample! We always try the local cuisine
when traveling in foreign countries. You learn something about their
culture – where they live is what they eat – and I believe
they know best how to prepare their own food. Thirty-four of us
toured India. Seven of us ate only in Indian Restaurants, and we
never got sick; the other 27 did.
My wife and I enjoy cooking and entertaining. Our friends and relatives
have come to expect a sample menu from each of our foreign trips.
We've found some interesting stores and markets looking for foreign
foods! Also every guest must taste every dish – lots of fun
and surprises!
Be sure to vote and/or offer suggestions for our 50th Anniversary
Celebration. On behalf of the Board "Thank you" for your
participation and input. I am looking forward to meeting and talking
with you at Mr. Stox.

A more extreme form of psychological problem associated with traveling
is dromomania, also known as vagabond neurosis. In the accepted
listing of psychiatric problems in the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders, the vagabond neurosis is classified
with the impulse control disorders. Sufferers have an abnormal impulse
to travel; they are prepared to spend beyond their means, sacrifice
jobs, lovers and security in their lust for new experiences.
Dromomaniacs not only feel more alive when traveling, but no sooner
are they home than they start planning their next trip. Fantasies
about travel occupy much of their waking thoughts and some of their
dreams." Does this remind you of anybody?

Effective October 1, 2003, all visa waiver countries travelers
must have a machine-readable passport to enter the U.S. without
a visa; otherwise a non-immigrant visa is required. Visa free countries
are the European Union, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, New Zealand and
Australia. Citizens of Belgium require this since May 15, 2003.

Guinness World Records has accepted Northern California
member Charles Veley as the youngest member to complete all 317
countries and territories at 37 years, 9 months and 17 days. Congratulations.
See photo below.

Betty Goff Cook Cartwright’s travel started with the Caribbean
and Europe at age 9, but it wasn’t until 1999 that she reached
the 300 mark. Presently she has 307, but admits that Diego Garcia
was her final fling. Missing: Ogasawara, Andaman, Laccadive and
Timor Leste.

The U.S. Government has redesigned the $20 bill. Take some time
to get to know the new bill. www.moneyfactory.com. |
