CHAIRMAN'S
MESSAGE
Many TCC members write to our headquarters when they add a country
or two, but we prefer to receive the updates only when you move
up to a new category – from the regular membership of 100
countries to Silver (150), Gold (200), etc. It will make our record
keeping less burdensome. Also, if a country is “Retired”
and no longer on our approved list (Berlin, for example), then that
country will count only to move up to a higher level. You will “lose”
that country after you have added a few places.
Our 50th Anniversary celebrations in New York in April and in Las
Vegas in October were very successful. Thanks to members Gig
Gwin and Kevin Hughes for their excellent
presentations in Las Vegas.
We hope to see you at our Southern California meeting on Saturday,
December 11.
We wish you the very best Holiday Greetings and a successful 2005
with lots of pleasant travel
experiences.

PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
As we look ahead into 2005, we have set the meeting dates for TCC
in Southern California – March 12, June 11, September 10 and
December 10. All are luncheon meetings from 11:30 to 3:00 pm. Mark
your calendars now.
Of course, we always welcome club members from all over the world
to be at our events whenever their travels may bring them to our
area. Likewise, our Coordinators in other cities also look forward
to having out-of-the-area members join their events. See the web
for the latest information on when they are scheduled in other areas.
We want to extend a special thanks to all our Area Coordinators
for their good work throughout the year.
The invoices for 2005 dues will be mailed in December and we will
appreciate prompt payment so we don’t have to follow up.

Lani
Shea has set a new Guinness World Record under the category
of “Youngest person to travel to all seven continents.”
Parents Jeff and Novita Shea sent TCC headquarters a copy of the
actual Guinness Certificate, the first we have ever received.
The Certificate reads: “Lani Shea (b.24 February
2001, USA) visited King George Island off the coast of Antarctica,
her 7th continent, on 28 December 2003, at the age of 2 years,
307 days. She traveled with her parents, Jeff
and Novita Shea.” It is signed by the “Keeper
of the Records, Guinness World Records Ltd.”
In the accompanying July 21, 2004, letter, Marco
Frigatti, Records Research Services in Guinness’s London
headquarters, told Lani “welcome to the very select brand
of Guinness World Records holders!” Click the links below
to view facsimiles of the letter and certificate. Please note

Lani became eligible for TCC membership when she
visited her 100th country, San Marino, in October 2003, at the
age of two years, eight months. She attended the March 2004 TCC
luncheon at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach with her parents.
Dad Jeff gave a fascinating presentation of his climbs to the
Seven Summits. (See June 2004 Centurian.)

The Denver Post finally ran the story about Robert
and Dorothy Pine in the Sunday, Oct. 17, issue.
We featured the Pines in our “Wanderlust Meanderings”
column in the Sept. Centurian.
The UK’s Sunday Telegraph featured
an article on various travelers’ clubs, including TCC, in
its July 25 edition. TCC member Jeanne Hoskins,
Sumner, WA, is among those featured.
The Oregon Track Club Masters October Newsletter
features an article, “100 Countries and Counting,”
about Donn Kirk, Pleasant Hill, OR. He has run
more than one mile (typically 4-5) in 100 different countries.
He began serious running in 1968 at age 36. His goals were to
run in all 50 states in the U.S. which he accomplished in 1979.
He also wanted to run around every state capitol building enough
times to exceed one mile. This was accomplished in Juneau in 2003.
The 100 countries goal was completed in April of this year.
Charles Veley, San Francisco, writes
that he recently drove the entire length of the Karakoram Highway,
including through Taliban/Al Qaeda areas. He said that trip “was
one of the most exciting times of my last five years of travel.”
He plans to write an Info File on the trip.
