When Robert and Dorothy Pine of Boulder, CO, reached Kashmir they completed the last of the 315 countries on the current TCC list. The final three countries the Pines needed to visit were Afghanistan, Iraq and Kashmir, all risky destinations at this time. Their daughter, Judith Young, accompanied them on this trip and has traveled frequently with them in recent years.
The Pines have been traveling the world for more than 60 years. Robert's travels began when he was a Navy pilot in WWII, serving in the Pacific theater and later flying the Berlin airlift. Dorothy began taking leisure travels with him after the end of the war.
They have had many perilous and fascinating experiences throughout the world. They experienced a 7.6 earthquake in Islamabad, Pakistan, on this last trip.
Even though they have reached the TCC goal, the Pines say they will continue traveling but might now stay a bit closer to home. We wrote a story about the Pines in the September 2004Centurian (click on "TCC Archive" at the left of your screen to find the article). They said they have attempted to really see the world by staying in places for days or weeks and they have also made multiple visits.

• TCC President David J. Barry, Santa Monica, CA, recently completed visits to 200 countries. His most recent addition was the spice island of Zanzibar, while cruising on the Royal Star. He was the only American aboard the ship and fellow passengers gave him a big party to help him celebrate his accomplishment.
• Congratulations, also, to Robert Spehar, Clinton Township, MI, who has now visited 300 countries.
• Past TCC President Floyd Baker, Anaheim, CA, and his wife, Rae, recently celebrated their 70th birthdays.
• Congratulations to Northern California Area Director Tim Carlson for having just made the 300 countries milestone.
• An article about TCC, featuring Gig Gwin, St. Louis, MO, appeared in the Great Escapes section of the Daily News, a newspaper in the Valley ( Los Angeles area).
• The Wisconsin area TCC chapter has disbanded but we're happy to have the addition of the Tennessee chapter (see photo below).
• Incoming TCC President Kevin Hughes, Phoenix, sent TCC headquarters comprehensive reports of his visits last May to the countries and areas which suffered from the tsunami last December. These countries still need help and tourists!
• North Korea briefly opened the door for U.S. passports recently. Among the TCC members who were able to get in was Vice President Kevin Hughes. His report is included in the enclosed Info File. He has videos of the border at Panmunjom, the 60th Anniversary (of the present regime) parade, riding a subway, the USS Pueblo, and the Arirang Mass games.
• Charles and Kimberly Veley, San Francisco, announce the birth of their son, Charles Adams Veley, Jr., on October 16. Sister Catherine is now about two. Charles says he's going to stay close to home for awhile.
• Charles Veley also reports that Bill Altaffer, Mammoth Lake, CA, has surpassed him as the “World's Most Traveled Man,” having traveled to 560 out of the 672 places on the mosttraveledpeople.com Web site. Charles visited a close 544 places from that list.
• An extensive feature story on the contested “World's Most Traveled Man” and the various country lists, including the TCC list, appeared in the Sunday, September 25, San Francisco Chronicle. Written by John Flinn, Executive Travel Editor, interviews were with Charles Veley, Jeff Shea, John Clouse, Bill Altaffer and Klaus Billep. It's an interesting and can be found online at the newspaper's Web site, www.SFGate.com. Click here to read the article.

(From time to time we will feature some background on your Board Members.) Board Member Ronald L. Endeman of El Cajon, CA, received his BA from the U. of California in Riverside, the city where he was born. He later received a Juris Doctor Degree from USC School of Law. He was a trial attorney in San Diego and was a partner in law firms in that city and San Francisco before forming his own firm, Endeman, Lincoln, Turek and Heater LLP in 1987. The firm specializes in civil trials.
Endeman says he is now “semi-retired,” leaving him much more time to travel and pursue other personal interests. He is also on the Board of Casa de Las Companas, a large retirement community in Rancho Bernardo, CA.
Ron has been married for 45 years to his wife, Judy, and has two children and three grandchildren.
Board Member Diane M. Jarrett of Newport Beach, CA, touts the “fabulous experiences” of being a member of TCC. “Meeting so many diverse and well-traveled people is rewarding and educational,” she explains. She gave us two recent examples.
On a recent trip to Scandinavia, she contacted a writer who had interviewed her by phone from Stockholm for his story in Lounge, the International Magazine. The writer and his father showed her an insider's view of Stockholm and she and the writer visited an Ice Hotel.
Diane recently made a stopover in New York on her way to Europe, where she contacted fellow TCC member Christine Kloner, and her husband, Noel Hewitt. She had met the couple during the TCC 50th Anniversary gathering in New York last year. They had an incredible evening at an Italian restaurant and then saw the Bolshoi Ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House.
This is just an example of the many new friends I have made through my association with TCC,” says Jarrett, who encourages other members to get involved and attend TCC meetings and functions.
Sharing in the common interest of ‘World Travel, the passport to peace through understanding," is indeed an appropriate motto for the club,” adds Diane.

Board Member Diane M. Jarrett had a wonderful visit
with Noel Hewitt and TCC member Christine Kloner at
their home in New York before continuing on to Europe.
